Pontos, Amisos ( 100-85 BC )
On obverse : Helmeted head of Ares ( Mars ) wearing a Corinthian crested helmet. Ares was the ancient Greek god
of war or, more properly, the spirit of battle. He represented the distasteful aspects of brutal warfare and slaughter.
On reverse : AMIΣOY( Amisus ) and sword in sheath. Placed on the Black Sea between Sinope and Pharnace, Amisus was founded in the sixth century BC by the Phoenicians and the Milesians. In the middle of the next century,
populated by Athenian colonists, it was renamed Peiraeus (Piraeus). Datames seized Amisus in 372 BC, the city
became dependent on Persian and an oligarchy was established.
